November 2, 2009
To the registered voters of the Fairland School District. Three main themes that I have heard while campaigning are 1) you want change, 2) you want someone qualified, with a college degree, and 3) you want someone with experience in education on your board. I am that person and humbly ask that you elect me to the Fairland School Board this Tuesday, November 3.
Dear parents, students, employees, and community members:
The 2009-2010 school year is just under way and another election is already upon us. As a candidate running for the Fairland school board, I promise to bring a new voice and a strong commitment to education to the board of education. My desire is to work with the community to see the district grow and prosper, and the only way to do that is to ensure our children are receiving the best education possible. To do this, we must ensure that the resources provided within the district are leading-edge. These resources include our schools, our curriculum, our curricular resources, our students, and our district's employees.
My experience as a college professor has given me insight into how children respond to the education process. My teaching skills and educating adaptations have been noted by students, consistently earning me top evaluations in my department and in helping be named professor of the year at Marshall University in 2005. I am confident that I will bring these valuable insights into the school district when implementing policies, reviewing and selecting curriculum, hiring and maintaining employees, etc.
As you can see from my resume/vitae, the work I have done during the past thirteen years in higher education has enabled me to develop an extensive knowledge base of skills in the educational arena. I have management experience, serving as the Director for the Center for Instructional Technology at Marshall University, as well as knowledge of the appropriate setup and requirements of educational computing facilities and curriculum through my work as an Assistant/Associate Professor at Marshall and in the Center for Instructional Technology. I am currently the curriculum coordinator for the Bachelor of Science degree in Computer and Information Technology at Marshall, and the chair of the University's undergraduate curriculum committee, responsible for approving all new curriculum at the university. I have also worked to grow the Computer and Information Technology major to its highest enrollment in six years for the Fall 2009 term.
Each of these positions has been made up of many facets, including the development of instructional materials delivered via technology and curricular development. While teaching, I have gained extensive knowledge about the requirements for sound K-12 education, preparing students for college and/or life.
I am a person who is active in the Proctorville community, coaching Little League baseball for Fairland Little League, and also, very active in my church’s Youth Department, serving as their director. Being raised in a family of educators, and through my involvement in the lives of so many children, I am confident that in this position, I will continue to make a difference. I believe that I can be a positive influence on the children, faculty, staff, and administration of the Fairland School District. I feel that my life experiences will bring something to the school board that no one else can.
My work experience has given me valuable knowledge in the areas of leadership, organization, communication, and time and task management skills. My skills and education have prepared me to work under pressure, to work well with others in multiple disciplines, to openly communicate in an effective manner, and to respond positively to crises. I also consider myself a quick learner and able to adapt to rapid changes, as well as work with people on an individual basis.
It is my impression that a seat on the Fairland school board will require integrity, energy, commitment, hard work, and a sincere interest in children, the district's staff, and education. I feel that my background matches the demands required by such a position. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you should happen to have any questions.
